I have been volenteering with Sasha's Cat rescue in Moncton as of late and I noticed that they have a lot of black cats as do most shelters. There are a number of reasons but mostly it comes down to 2 reasons. One is superstition....I can't help you there. The other is that they take bad photos. I can't help there either, cats are horrible photographers, it might be because cameras were never designed for those with paws it might be because they are cats and don't care about taking photos.
Now that I got the joke out of my system: Black cats don't take bad photos, people take bad photos of black cats. I can help you with two really simple tricks though. I did these photos on my phone because that what most people use today.
1 LIGHT! Any source of light will help, make sure that you source is in front so you get photos like this

With anything but especially something dark (like a black cat) if you light source is from behind this is what you get....so don't do that.

2 The second thing when it comes to photographing animals or anything for that matter is KEEP IT SIMPLE! keep the clutter out of the picture. In photography less is more. My best images are often really simple in setup and in design because the human brain will better process this and find it more pleasing. So try these out and let me know how they work for you. If you have any tips that would be useful for photographing black cats and want share please do. I can be found on facebook at Roger Flanagan Photography.
